Berlin Group's openFinance framework extends APIs beyond PSD2 access to broader account types, enriched data, premium services and additional payments. It standardises interaction and authorisation patterns, while deployed services remain subject to consent, contracts and law.
TL;DR:
- Extends standardised APIs beyond the PSD2 service perimeter.
- Covers broader account data, premium services and additional payment functions.
- Provides a common framework for open-finance service integration.
Summary
Beyond PSD2
Berlin Group's openFinance framework extends APIs beyond PSD2 access to broader account types, enriched data, premium services and additional payments. It standardises interaction and authorisation patterns, while deployed services remain subject to consent, contracts and law.
Shared Service Definitions
The openFinance framework extends the Berlin Group's API work into broader financial-data and service interactions. It provides common technical building blocks and service definitions so financial institutions and third parties can offer interoperable interfaces beyond the minimum PSD2 access use cases. The scope of any deployment depends on the services and version actually adopted.
Authorised Access
The framework's role is to standardise interaction patterns, data structures and the handling of authorised access. It does not itself create a legal entitlement to every type of financial information. Consent, contractual arrangements and applicable law determine which data or services a participant may use.
Versioned Artefacts
For providers, the practical benefit is a common starting point for interfaces that would otherwise be designed separately for each partner. Implementers still need to align supported resources, security profiles, customer authorisation and operational behaviour. Technical interoperability and permission to use a service are related but distinct requirements. The current library lists separate V2 architecture, consent, administrative-service and data-dictionary artefacts with their own versions; the framework is not one undifferentiated release.
