Aadhaar Registered Devices Technical Specifications

std_aadhaar_registered_devices

UIDAI's Aadhaar Registered Devices specifications define requirements for biometric devices and their Registered Device services. They support Aadhaar authentication by governing the device layer; individual products need their own evidence of certification and deployed revision.

TL;DR:

  • Defines biometric-device and RD Service requirements for Aadhaar authentication.
  • RD Services return signed and encrypted biometric PID data.
  • The specification family does not prove a deployed device’s revision or certification.

Summary

Aadhaar Device Specification

UIDAI's Aadhaar Registered Devices specifications define requirements for biometric devices and their Registered Device services. They support Aadhaar authentication by governing the device layer; individual products need their own evidence of certification and deployed revision.

RD Service And Capture

UIDAI’s registered-device specification describes an RD Service supplied by the biometric-device provider. The service captures and processes biometrics and returns a signed, encrypted PID block to the calling application. The specification requires protection of the device signing key and prevents an external program from supplying stored biometrics for signing as if freshly captured.

Standard Device Interfaces

The published interface includes capture with PidOptions XML input and PidData output, plus getDeviceInfo for device information. Service discovery and invocation let an authentication application use a common registered-device interface. The RD Service forms the protected biometric payload; the calling application then uses it within the separate Aadhaar authentication process.

Revision And Deployment Scope

UIDAI’s catalogue and official document identify Version 2.0 Revision 7 of January 2022, distinct from older Revision 6 material. The specification family and the deployed device revision are different claims. A product requiring a registered biometric device does not prove that a particular device is certified, implements Revision 7 or meets a later L0-to-L1 migration requirement.
