American Express adds Airbnb stays to its rewards channel

TL;DR:

American Express lets eligible United States cardholders discover and book more than one million Airbnb listings through its travel website and app. Qualifying prepaid bookings can earn Membership Rewards points, with additional benefits for eligible Platinum cardholders. The partnership adds a new distribution channel for hosts, while Airbnb retains reservation management and existing host policies. It does not make every Airbnb stay eligible for premium credits: the lodging benefit applies to qualifying Luxe bookings, and the Experiences credit requires a qualifying Luxe reservation first.

A new route from card rewards to a stay

American Express has brought more than one million Airbnb listings into its travel website and app for eligible United States cardholders. The partnership is available from 22 October. Eligible prepaid bookings earn Membership Rewards points, expanding the accommodation choices within the card company’s travel channel.

Airbnb says hosts keep their existing prices, payouts, house rules and cancellation policies. Reservations remain on Airbnb after booking, and hosts manage them there as usual. Featured homes are refreshed regularly, so this is a selected inventory rather than a promise that every listing is included.

Eligible Consumer and Business Platinum cardholders can earn five points per dollar on qualifying prepaid Airbnb reservations through Amex Travel. Other eligible cards enrolled in the rewards programme earn two points per dollar on those bookings. Card-specific terms still apply.

Distribution can influence the payment choice

For a customer choosing where to book, rewards can become part of the comparison alongside the nightly rate, fees and cancellation flexibility. Adding homes to an established card-linked travel channel brings that payment incentive closer to the accommodation decision.

For hosts, the practical change is another way for guests to discover a property without a new reservation-management workflow. That can broaden distribution, but extra visibility should not be confused with a guaranteed rise in bookings or a change to payout terms.

Premium credits have a narrower scope

The annual lodging credit for eligible Platinum cardholders is up to $600, split into two half-year allowances of up to $300. For Airbnb, it applies to eligible prepaid Luxe bookings through Amex Travel with a minimum two-night stay, rather than ordinary Airbnb bookings generally.

The new annual Experiences credit is up to $250 and unlocks only after a qualifying prepaid Luxe booking. The benefit then covers eligible Experiences purchased directly with Airbnb during the remainder of that calendar year. Certain third-party partner purchases are excluded.

Compare the complete booking

Travellers should compare the final price and cancellation terms, confirm the exact card and property eligibility, and check which service handles changes or support. Hosts should monitor whether the additional channel brings incremental demand rather than simply moving existing guests between booking routes.
