Structure of a domestic clearing code.

BSC (Bank Sort Code) is Aurato's umbrella for local bank and clearing-member identifiers.
Unlike other identifiers, it's not one worldwide code format. Choose the country and code system before interpreting the characters.

What BSC can - and cannot - tell you.

A domestic clearing code identifies an institution, office or routing endpoint within a national code system. Its meaning depends on the country and system; BSC is not a single worldwide format.

What BSC can indicate

  • The institution assigned to the code in its national system
  • A branch, office or clearing endpoint, depending on the system
  • Bank, state or regional identifiers in systems that encode them
  • The routing destination for a domestic payment

What BSC cannot determine

  • An individual customer account or account holder
  • Account balance, status or transaction history
  • A unique country or code system from the format alone
  • Current payment-scheme eligibility or a successful transfer

BSC FAQ

What does BSC mean here?

Bank Sort Code is the label for Aurato's domestic clearing-code lookup. The page also covers ABA routing numbers, Australian BSBs, Indian IFSCs and German BLZs; those are separate national systems.

Why can one input have several candidate systems?

Several domestic identifiers share a numeric length. For example, UK sort codes and Australian BSBs both use six digits. Select a code type when you know it, and use the country and source directory to disambiguate.

Is a sort code the same as an account number?

No. A routing or sort code identifies a financial institution, office or clearing endpoint. The customer's account number is a separate value.

Does a published code prove that payments will work?

No. Directory coverage and payment-stream eligibility can change. Confirm current scheme participation and account details through the relevant payment provider before sending money.
